Academic Advising & Support
Academic Advising for Haverford students begins the summer before incoming students arrive on campus, and extends throughout and beyond students’ four years.
This team serves as the core advising unit within a much wider web of support that includes mentors from the Center for Career and Professional Advising, Access and Disability Services, the Office of Academic Resources, the Writing Center, and other related offices.
Advising Deans
Your Advising Dean will partner with you to learn about your goals, aspirations, and concerns; to connect you with opportunities, resources, and networks of support and enable you to navigate college protocols and practices; and to provide scaffolding as you rise to meet challenges and offer support in times of crisis.
Deans are assigned alphabetically by last name and offer opportunities to meet over the summer and throughout the academic year, ranging from one-on-one conversations to gatherings with other members of your cohort to town halls.
Your Academic Team
Your academic team at Haverford partners with you at every stage of your academic journey. Before you arrive on campus, you will work with a summer pre-registration advisor. With the start of Customs, you will transition to a pre-major advisor who will support you for your first two years. When you declare your major in the spring of your sophomore year, a major advisor will become your primary academic advisor for the final two years.. Over the course of your entire Haverford career, your advising dean is an active and accessible partner as you problem solve, explore and navigate your academic journey.
Pre-Major and Major Advising
Summer Pre-Registration Advising
Faculty members meet with incoming students in late July and early August to help ensure that students have the information that they need and thoughtful guidance in preparing for Pre-Registration in mid-August.
Pre-Major Advising
Pre-major advisors work with students over the course of their first two years at Haverford, beginning during on-campus Customs orientation through major declaration in the spring of Sophomore year, and provide ongoing insight and opportunities for reflection about the classes in which you are interested in relation to overarching college and domain requirements.
Major Advising
After you declare your major in the spring of Sophomore year, your major advisor will work closely with you to map out a path for successful completion of your major alongside your college requirements,, starting with the major proposal plan and reflection that you develop during the major declaration process through your preparation for and navigation of your thesis experience.
