Whenever possible, we work through existing partnerships and aim to cover the amount. There is a great deal of fluctuation across our partnerships and in most markets today, but for partnerships, the important point is that these costs may be covered. For internships where we don’t work regularly, we ask students to propose appropriate amounts. We take those proposals into consideration as we award any amounts.

Summer Fellowship Funding
Internships are awarded according to the criteria listed on our website.
Summer Stipend, $4,000: Every full-time CPGC Summer Fellow receives a stipend of $4,000 for a full summer internship; half-time internships are pro-rated for a $2,000 stipend; other variations based on that formula are possible. $4,000 awards work out to roughly $14 per hour for an internship in which a student is working 35 hours per week for eight weeks. Some internships will ask a bit less of you; some much more. Our goal with the funding is to support you to be able to show up and engage fully with a professionally and intellectually interesting job opportunity that advances peace, justice, inclusion, or sustainability. Your stipend will be taxed.
For many students, the $4,000 stipend will be the extent of their award from CPGC.
Opportunity to apply for coverage of additional costs. For some students, a $4,000 stipend is completely sufficient to complete the experience. This should be the case for internships from home or in one’s own community, for instance. In some contexts and for some students, however, additional resources may be available to further address the costs of travel, accommodations, and food. When you apply for your internship, you will have the opportunity to apply for coverage of these additional costs. Receiving this funding is not guaranteed. Additional costs are addressed whenever possible, and according to the guidelines here:
- The quality of the application according to the criteria linked there.
- Existing partnerships are prioritized.
- Each of the following categories are prioritized in alignment with the intention of the endowments that support CPGC Fellowships: democracy-promotion, humanitarian engagement in the Middle East, environmental policy work, health and education in Asia, and work with indigenous organizations or networks.
- Additional costs are only available for continuing students; they are not available for graduating seniors.
When additional funds are awarded above the regular stipend to further support travel, accommodations, and food, the student is affected one of two ways:
- The CPGC directly pays a partner organization or entity. When possible, the CPGC will arrange for the costs of travel, accommodation, or food to be paid through an existing partner. This is the case for considerable portions of partnerships in Ghana, Jordan, and Mexico, as well as for air travel purchased by the CPGC, and accommodations and limited meals on campus in the case of Philadelphia regional partnerships.
- In the context of these ongoing partnerships mentioned in section 1 immediately above, when a student receives the $4,000 regular rate only (and no supplemental funds specific to food, accommodations, and travel), the CPGC will pay food and accommodation costs directly on behalf of the student. The amount that the student sees in respect to summer stipend, will be reduced by the amount of the cost of accommodations, food, and travel on site. The remaining stipend will be issued directly to the student and will be taxable.
- In some cases, when additional funds are awarded to support food or accommodation costs, it is not possible to arrange those services directly through a partner. In many cases, this involves the need for additional funds to support food costs. In these cases, the additional funds will be added to your stipend. You will be taxed on any additional amount added to your stipend.
To summarize: The CPGC will fund 50 - 60 students for summer internships each year. The regular rate for an internship is a stipend of $4,000. That stipend is taxable. For many students, $4,000 will be the extent of the award. Students may also appeal for additional funding to support the costs of travel, food, and accommodation. Internship awards and additional costs are awarded through published criteria. When considering additional cost questions, the CPGC prioritizes the strength of the original application according to the criteria, coupled with whether the internship is with an existing partner and/or if it supports democracy-promotion, humanitarian engagement in the Middle East, environmental policy work, health and education in Asia, and/or work with indigenous organizations or networks. CPGC stipends are taxable.

-
What if I have additional costs I am trying to cover beyond flight, accommodations, and food?
The CPGC stipend is intended to support students with additional costs as is typical of any summer job. Students who are LIFTFAR eligible may apply for additional funding through the LIFTFAR program as necessary.
Taxation
In most cases, your CPGC stipend will be taxed at U.S. rates. The Controller’s office reports the full amount of your stipend to the IRS as taxable income. Depending on many factors, you may owe taxes for the year. Please prepare for this by researching, discussing with your family, or if possible, talking to a tax professional.
