Sustainability

As a core institutional principle, sustainability animates Haverford's broad mission of stewarding its financial, ethical, and curricular endowments in the interest of educating principled global citizens while safeguarding intergenerational equity as a perpetual institution.

Philosophy at Haverford

Philosophy majors and minors at Haverford are part of an active community of faculty and students committed to exploring the ideas on which we base our understanding of reason, value, and our very existence.

Named after one alumnus and two current students—(from left) Bradford Gladstone ’18, Andrew Lee ’20, and Aarushi Mohan ’20—the Department of Philosophy's new Gladstone Lee Mohan collection features works by authors from backgrounds currently underrepresented in the profession, affirming Haverford’s commitment to diversity. Study Abroad Photo Contest

“I’m immensely happy that I made the decision to study abroad at University College Dublin during the spring 2019 semester. I had the opportunity to experience a whole new educational system and national culture, make a new set of friends, and see parts of the world and hear viewpoints that I never would’ve gotten the chance to otherwise.”  – Caroline Tien '20

Each year more than 130 Haverford students take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad.

The 2019 Study Abroad Photo Contest first-place winner in the Ford Faces category: Eliza Brosgol '20, "Fords in Fjords," Denmark.

Visual Culture, Arts, and Media - Three Exhibits

Through November 20, 2019
Visual Culture, Arts, and Media

VCAM is hosting three new exhibits: Lives Derailed: Stories of Returning Mexican Migrants, which gathers portraits and interviews of some of the people whose stories were recorded as part of the Migration Encounters oral history project; Nunca Dejemos de Luchar, which shares the result of community conversations and art-making workshops with artist Michelle Angela Ortiz; and In Absentia, which uses the visual language of W.E.B. Du Bois’ early-20th-century infographics as a starting place for considering the veracity of data today. Details »

The Haverford College Arboretum hosts a variety of events, such as the recent pumpkin-carving workshop and guided night excursion along the Nature Trail, where visitors could witness the jack o’lanterns in full glow. Photo: Ruiming Li '22.

Ford Games - Good Fit

Physical education has been part of the Haverford experience since the College’s earliest days. As far back as the 1896-97 academic year, the course catalog described a “refitted” gymnasium, which included among its equipment “rowing, sculling, and wrist machines, chest weights ... and the necessary apparatus for the gymnastic game of basket-ball.”

Read "Good Fit" in the Spring/Summer 2019 issue of Haverford Magazine

Today, Haverford requires students to take six quarters of physical education to graduate. Participation in one of the College’s 23 varsity teams will fulfill that requirement, but there are plenty of other choices as well, including the badminton club. Photo: Rumming Li '22
