MMUF Fellows gather several times a semester to present their research, exchange and critique ideas, and support each other's academic and professional goals.
Typically, new fellows attend a short orientation workshop at the end of the spring semester of their sophomore year (shortly after being admitted into the Program). The purpose of this workshop is to provide the Fellows with an in-depth introduction to the workings of the program, familiarity with the many financial and service/guidance tools and resources available to Fellows both as undergraduate and even more so as graduate students, and to begin building the crucial relationships with peer fellows in their cohort and the rising seniors cohort of Haverford MMUF fellows, as well as Fellow alums. Here, it is our hope that in the future we will be collaborating with Bryn Mawr College, to integrate the bi-co MMUF Orientation workshops, so as to provide deeper links with a wider set of MMUF Fellows across the two campuses.
In the two years following admittance into the Program, fellows will be required to attend monthly meetings (averaging two per month) organized and moderated by the MMUF coordinators on campus throughout the academic year (Sept.–April). These meetings will have a heavy academic and professional basis, and will include workshops offered on various topics of direct relevance to the students’ academic and professional goals. These will include: preparation for the GRE; writing and research skills; proposal writing skills; public speaking and interview skills; presentation skills; financial aid; dinner at the Provost’s house; and navigating social and professional codes of life in academia. Students attend lectures or other events at nearby MMUF host campuses, as well. We typically also plan cultural outings such as attending a Broadway play, enjoying music performances at the Kimmel Center, as well as museum exhibitions, and dance performances. These cultural outings usually take place towards the end of the Fall semester, in anticipation of the holiday season.
