Office Hour - Philip Meneely

Professor of Biology Philip Meneely, who came to Haverford in 1995, has been working with the nematode worm C. elegans for more than 40 years. Most recently, his lab has studied how genes interact with each other to produce their effects.

Music at Haverford

The Department of Music at Haverford offers a creative approach to music theory, a curriculum in music history that deals with music in the social context and embraces world music and jazz, while our applied music program and ensembles provide students with opportunities for performances and tours.

Ingrid Arauco’s composition students workshopped their assignments with professional musicians including Network for New Music and percussionist Phil O’Banion.

Assistant Professor of Linguistics Brook Danielle Lillehaugen went on an exciting treasure hunt for Zapotec texts during a three-week research trip to Oaxaca, Mexico. Lillehaugen was on the lookout for manuscripts to add to the growing collection in the Ticha Project—a digital publication of Colonial Zapotec resources.

Much of Assistant Professor of Computer Science Sorelle Friedler’s research takes place in a heady realm known as “high-dimensional space”—used to model data sets with many attributes—where, instead of the two or three dimensions most of us are familiar with, there can be 250 or even 1,000 dimensions.

Studying Historical "Madness"

History is essential to a free and enlightened citizenry and forms a cornerstone of the liberal arts education at Haverford College. Our varied curriculum encourages students to analyze and interpret the past from many different perspectives and to recognize their own role in writing “history.”

Jonathan Wilson Uncovers 400-Million-Year-Old Plant Skeletons

Jonathan Wilson, assistant professor of biology and environmental studies, recently published a paper outlining an extensive evolutionary history of silica biomineralization—the absorption of silica from soil—in plants, proving that this process is much older than previously thought.
