List a detailed description of this specific campus job. | Working as a Summer Library Assistant provides an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the over-all and day-to-day functioning of the library. Workers find this experience better prepares them to utilize the library and its resources to do research, write papers for their classes and their major capstone paper. Many of the skills learned can be transferred and utilized in future Professional positions.
Job Description & Responsibilities Assistants work for one or two departments and their day is divided accordingly. Access & Circulation Services (2 FTE) – Assistants perform a variety of tasks associated with the circulation and maintenance of Lutnick Library’s collections (on and off-site) and the fulfillment of requests for research and course needs. Assistants will pull & process materials for users in the TriCo or course reserves; Put materials away by call number; Use Excel to discern actions and record progress; Use an inventory software; Use the Library software system to check in and send materials; Assist with Summer projects. Physically move books from one location to another within and between buildings. CMMS (Collection Management & Metadata Services) (1 FTE) – Assistants provide support for the departments of acquisitions, cataloging, and serials. Update records in Tripod, our Library database; Prepare newly acquired materials by organizing, receiving, loading a title record into our system, printing labels, and processing them for the shelves. Provide clerical support & assist with projects as needed. Harris Music Assistant (1 FTE) – Workers perform a variety of tasks associated with the circulation and maintenance of the Music Library’s collections and the fulfillment of requests for research and course needs in Music. Assists with cataloging, processing and digitizing materials. Assist with Summer projects. Interlibrary Loan (.5 FTE) – Procure books, DVDs, CDs and articles from other libraries for our users. Supply these materials to other libraries’ as they request them. Packs, ships, scans and receives these materials. Lutnick Liaison (1 FTE) – Liaisons welcome patrons to the libraries’ main branch and help users connect with services and information. Provide orientation, research support, and help so that patrons effectively discover and use library materials and technologies. Liaisons act as first point of contact and refer users to Library staff or other departments on campus as appropriate. Work closely with a librarian on projects involving research, collections, or instruction. Marketing & Video Editing Asst. (.5 FTE) – Assistants will conduct In-Person and Zoom interviews with other summer Libraries interns and edit the videos for posting, as well as, footage for the “Two Minute Thesis” video series. A variety of smaller video and marketing tasks will also be undertaken. Metadata Management Services (.5 FTE) – responsible for two main metadata management projects associated with the TriCollege Libraries’ digital asset management system. These projects are preparing Class of ’24 Senior Theses for ingest and Uploading Course syllabi from Fall 2023 & Spring 2024. Quaker & Special Collections (.5 FTE) – engages in a variety of work related to patron services and collections management in a rare books and manuscripts department. Supports researchers by fulfilling reproduction requests and answering research questions. Pulls and shelves materials and do several collections management projects in the stacks. Enhances online access to Quaker & Special Collections unique materials, adding new and in-depth information to online collection guides. Works with conservation staff to provide housing for fragile or damaged rare materials. Research & Instruction (1 FTE) – Works with four Research & instruction Librarians on a variety of projects. Projects include, though not limited to: Help develop new collections for the library; Review and update class research guides; Work with a team turning Facebook and Twitter posts into resources for research; Create new content for a database on gender in the Middle Ages. White Science Liaison (1 FTE) – Workers perform a variety of tasks associated with the circulation and maintenance of the Science Library’s collections and the fulfillment of requests for research and course needs in the Sciences. Assist with Summer projects. |
Qualifications: | Highly reliable & punctual. Attentive, courteous, helpful and professional attitude while on duty. Ability to work well with a supervisor, individually, and as a team player. Effective oral and written communication skills. Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with the MS Office suite, Google suite and an aptitude to learn new applications. Attention to detail (especially in following routine processes). Ability to understand the importance of details as well as the big picture Flexible in responding to changing priorities Ability to lift/carry up to 20 – 25 pounds Ability to reach high and low shelves and/or to use a step stoolDesirable: Research experience Knowledge of foreign languages |
