Additional Course Info | Class Number: 2075 Love and freedom are words that constantly intertwine in the literatures of Philadelphias self-fashioning. Known, of course, as the City of Brotherly Love, William Penns projected utopia of religious freedom was, before the Civil War, the hotbed of political, racial, cultural and sexual revolution. The city where, in the shadow of plague and rising racism, the first non-violent Civil Rights protests took place and where Black Americans forged a literature of both freedom and beloved community. A city where, under lenient Quaker law, marriage laws allowed for greater sexual freedom than elsewhere in the country, where women were better educated than anywhere else in the world, and where experiments in gender equality and indeed, gender diversity, were able to proceed in relative peace. In this course, and in the city itself, we will examine literature written in and about Philadelphia before the Civil War, exploring how and why Philadelphians engaged questions of love, freedom and non-freedom. This course will be taught in Philadelphia as part of the Tri-Co Philly Program and make use of the citys archives, museums and historical sites. Enrollment Cap:18. Priority in registration will be given to students participating in the Philly Program. Remaining seats are available to other Tri-Co students, by lottery, if demand exceeds remaining spaces in the course. If you are interested in applying to the Tri-Co Philly Program, you must fill out the application, which is due Friday, November 3rd by 11:59 pm. Students in the program register for two of three of the programs courses, which include this course and The History & Politics of Punishment (20E) or University City (PEAC H327). For additional information and the program application see the program's website https://www.brynmawr.edu/philly-program. Those not participating in the Tri-Co Philly Program do not need to complete the application and can simply pre-register for a class. Location: MLK Room at the Friends Center in Philadelphia. |
