Research
Elise Herrala is Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology. Her research is positioned at the intersection of sociology, art history, and cultural studies. She is currently at work on a book manuscript, titled The Art of Transition, in which she examines how socialism, political and economic crisis, and globalization have altered, shaped, and built the postsocialist field of contemporary art in Russia. More broadly, her teaching and research interests include social theory, qualitative methods, and the sociology of culture—in particular investigating relationships of culture and power in order to understand how culture is created, reproduced, and deployed.
