Diversity in the Department of Psychology
The Haverford Psychology Department is committed to creating and sustaining a climate that centers diversity, equity, and inclusion, and honors the various identities that each student holds.
We recognize that diversity (including, but not limited to issues of race, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability, neurodiversity, and socioeconomic status) is integral to a sound and robust psychological science. In addition, representing the breadth of diversity and difference in experiences is central to our values as a department. Thus, we strive to continuously empower students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds to feel at home in the psychology department.
- Critically evaluate our curriculum and syllabi to ensure representation from Black and other racial minority scholars.
- Conduct annual self-assessments of the state of diversity and inclusion in our department in order to improve the student experience, especially for students from underrepresented backgrounds.
- Identify and disseminate resources to support the emotional and intellectual lives of our students of color.
- Promote equity by making opportunities for research engagement, including (but not limited to) faculty labs, college-wide programs, and federal programs, especially ones for students from underrepresented backgrounds, as transparent as possible.
Student Advisory Board
The Psychology Department is in the process of forming a Student Advisory Board as a mechanism for students to have more agency and influence in departmental decisions and policies.
