This is not far from the truth, as many professors of Greek background staff world renowned universities and lead research and studies in many fields, pioneering great scientific breakthroughs. Here is a list of 12 of the most prominent bright minds that came out of Greece and are offering their insight and services to foreign educational institutions.
Prof. Kitroeff responds:
I was surprised and humbled to see I was included in a reputable Greek news website's list of "12 Great Greek Minds at Foreign Universities." The Greek intellectual diaspora is huge, so there are surely more than twelve of us who deserve that distinction. I am especially flattered to be the only historian on the list. The web-site listing the twelve of us lamented "if only they could have stayed and helped Greece." I am not sure what we could have done. Greece's academic life is floundering not because of the lack of first class minds but because both mentalities and structures are mired in a pervasive dependency on the state and party politics. Nonetheless, I think I can speak for all of us abroad in saying we feel our homeland's pain acutely, and would do anything to help!
This spring, students of Haverford College have the opportunity to enroll in Prof. Kitroeff's HIST 117, Modern Mediterranean History, as well as HIST 3567, Nationalism and Migration.
The History Department recognizes Prof. Kitroeff and commends him for this prestigious distinction.
