In this presentation, we will see how certain women journalists of the Belle Époque positioned themselves against the dominant discourse of the daily press in order to better use the press as a vehicle of social justice. While much of the rhetoric from the grande presse sensationalized events around crimes in which a woman was accused, Séverine (1855-1929), and later journalists from the all-woman written daily La Fronde (1897-1905), sought to better understand the life of the accused in order to gain insight and comprehension, even empathy, toward her (presumed) actions. These women journalists, through their collaborative efforts, created communities of care among women journalists as well as among readers. The newspaper as court of empathy sought to abolish public discourse that surveilled and punished women, holding her in a position of alterity, and instead made room for a public discourse that was not strictly disciplinary toward women.
