In the past two decades, many scholars have increasingly challenged longstanding assumptions about the inevitability of decolonization. And yet, other routes out of formal empire fizzled and the existing literature has struggled to explain why. In this talk, Marker looks to youth, at the center of the entangled history of decolonization and early European integration, for more answers. Focusing on France and French Africa, she explores how public and private programs to promote solidarity between French and African youth collided with transnational efforts to make young people in Western Europe feel European after World War II. The result, she argues, was a hardened sense that France did indeed belong in Europe, and French Africa and Africans did not quite fit in the new Europe-in-the-making. Thus, African independence may not have been inevitable, but European integration was an important tip of the scales in that direction.
