Prof. James Lennox will be speaking on the work of Aryeh Kosman, who was Whitehead Professor of Philosophy at Haverford and taught at Haverford from 1962 to 2006.

Aryeh Kosman's writings on Aristotle's conception of understanding and Aristotle's philosophy of animal life have influenced several generations of scholars. Prof. Lennox will discuss their influence on the field generally and on his own research.

James G. Lennox is Emeritus Professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, and secondary member of the Departments of Classics and Philosophy, University of Pittsburgh.  His research and publications focus on the relationship between philosophy and the life sciences, with particular emphasis on ancient Greece and the 19th and 20th centuries.  

Lennox has led the study of Aristotle's philosophy of science, and especially his philosophy of biology, through the past 40 years. That subfield is now a thriving area as a result of Lennox's work. His writings include Aristotle on Inquiry: Erotetic Frameworks and Domain Specific Norms (Cambridge, 2020), Aristotle's Philosophy of Biology: Studies in the Origins of Life Science (Cambridge, 2001), and Aristotle: On the Parts of Animals: I-IV (Oxford, 2001).
