When Samuel Schindel ’24 was looking at colleges he concentrated on small liberal arts institutions, small class sizes, and the opportunity to work closely with professors. While visiting Haverford he heard directly from enrolled students that professors are approachable and supportive. Sam also wanted to continue competing on a track and cross country team, running long distance. After meeting with since retired legendary track and field and cross-country coach Tom Donnelly, he knew he’d found the community he’d envisioned.

Fall of 2021 Sam took Analytical Methods for Economics with Professor David Owens. He found the topics interesting and the class particularly engaging. Sam continued enrolling in economics classes, with an eventual declaration of the major. He will also graduate with minors in Statistics and Mathematics.

Sam highlighted some professors and classes that have been particularly impactful. Economics/ICPR professor Neal Grabell’s Financial Accounting; math professor Robert Manning’s Scientific Computing; economics professor Anne Preston’s Sports as an Economics Lab; statistics professor Weiwen Miao’s Applied Multivariable Statistical Analysis; and economics professor Giri Parameswaran’s Advanced Econometrics.

Sam’s thesis is examining how estate taxes affect elderly migration. He uses survey data from 2002-2021, and he has compiled his own estate tax dataset in doing so.

To complement his education, Sam has secured enriching summer internships.  The summer following his sophomore year he worked at Oberon Securities in New York City (funded by the Whitehead internship program) where he served as an Investment Banking Intern. Working with raw accounting data he generated monthly statement models to project gross profits and net incomes.

The following summer he returned to New York City as an intern at Royal Bank of Canada as a Global Markets Analyst.  He participated in a rotational program where he interned on both the Structured Equity Derivatives Sales Desk team and the Equity Trading/Sales Trading Desk team.  This internship has resulted in a full-time position post-graduation where he will be working on the trading floor in a fast paced, competitive atmosphere.
