Publius Ovidius Naso (43 BCE-17 CE) was a prolific and transgressive poet under the early Roman Empire, whose works span themes of love, myth, religion, and politics. From his early elegiac works to his great epic the Metamorphoses and his heartsick exile poetry, we will gain a detailed understanding of this larger-than-life figure. In this process, we will develop language fluency and an appreciation for Latin poetry, including its literary devices and meter.
