Additional Course Info | Class Number: 2605 This is a topics course. Course content varies.; Current topic description: Deciphering Language in the Human Brain: Language is one of few cognitive processes that differentiates humans from the rest of the animal world. How does the human brain instantiate such complex cognitive operations as syntax, reading, and phonology that allow us to speak, sign, and understand human language? How are these neural mechanisms affected by neurological disorders like stroke, dyslexia, or dementia? In this seminar style course, students will explore the neural underpinnings of speech and language, including topics such as language acquisition, multilingualism, signed vs. spoken languages, disorders of language, and music vs. language in the brain. Students will learn how cognitive neuroscience techniques have been used to address major theoretical questions and will develop skills in research methods by designing a research proposal to test their own research questions. Haverford: Natural Science (NA) ( ) Enrollment Cap: 16. If enrollment exceeds the cap, a lottery will be held as follows: Seniority giving even odds to Psychology and Neuroscience majors, followed by Seniority giving even odds to Psychology and Neuroscience minors |
