Course content varies.; Current topic description: Playing Ball: Global History of Sport: This course explores the historical development of sport from the late nineteenth century to the present. In the past hundred and fifty years, sports have been a key agent in normalizing ideas about biological difference, capitalist competition, and social, cultural, and physical inequalities between people. Sports have also been important sights of resistance to international and domestic power relations and normative ideas and regulations. We will investigate sport as a site in which ideas about class, nationalism, imperialism, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and ability have been formed, reinforced, and were also challenged.
