Topics may vary.; Current topic description: This course considers the German fairy-tale tradition between 1800 and the present day, examining both German folk tales (Volksmärchen) and literary fairy tales (Kunstmärchen). Throughout the semester, students will explore how the fairy tale intersects with topics such as German history, nationalism, politics, philosophy, fantasy, religion, and ideas of gender, as authors revisit and readapt familiar ideas and fairy-tale characters across prose, poetry, illustration, film and music. The course emphasizes the development of conversational, writing, listening and interpretive skills. Discussion and written assignments will be in German. Specific points of German grammar will be reviewed over the semester, as well as on an as-needed basis.
