Additional Course Info | Class Number: 2493 This course provides an in-depth examination of research and theory in a particular area of clinical psychology. Topics will vary from year to year.; Current topic description: Eating is a physiological process necessary for survival, yet is influenced substantially by our thoughts, feelings and culture, at times leading to illness and psychopathology. This seminar will focus on the psychology and culture of eating as it affects human physical and mental health. The first half of the class will examine the psychological processes that contribute to everyday eating (e.g., taste preferences, food aversions) and the cultural food context in the U.S., including food fads and marketing, while the second half will focus on health problems that can arise related to eating, such as obesity and eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder. The aims of this class are to 1) provide an in-depth exploration of the central concepts, theories, research questions, debates and policy questions related to these topics; 2) develop students’ understanding and competence to critically evaluate these topics, 3) enhance students' ability to integrate theory and literature across various areas of psychology related to food and eating; and 4) encourage active engagement and communication skills regarding research findings and public policy related to the psychology of eating.
