Additional Course Info | Class Number: 2274 Major sociological theories of the relationships between education and society, focusing on the effects of education on inequality in the United States and the historical development of primary, secondary, and post-secondary education in the United States. Other topics include education and social selection, testing and tracking, and micro- and macro-explanations of differences in educational outcomes. This is a Praxis II course; placements are in local schools.; In addition to the current Bionic course description, I would add that we'll definitely examine how this pandemic has affected (differentially so!) the US education system. The course explores a variety of educational inequalities in the US (primarily race/ethnic and social class) and challenges us to study past attempts at reform. We will think together about what reforms might work now. Approach: Cross-Cultural Analysis (CC); Haverford: B: Analysis of the Social World (B), Social Science (SO) Enrollment Cap: 25; If the course exceeds the enrollment cap the following criteria will be used for the lottery: Major/Minor/Concentration; Education Minors/Concentration; I am planning on teaching this course via Zoom at its "regularly" scheduled time (MoTh 5:40PM - 7:00PM). All classes will be recorded and the recordings will be made available. I want to make sure, though, to connect with each of you in person at the beginning of the semester (we'll meet outdoors in a socially-distanced way). Please plan on meeting me for in-person individual ten-minute meetings during the first or second week of classes. For those who are not on campus, we will zoom our one-on-one meeting. The course is listed as being a Praxis II course, which would normally mean that students would have placements in Phila schools. Since this isn't possible, the Fall 2020 version of the course will be a Praxis I course, featuring occasional Zoom visits from education industry personnel (administrators, teachers, etc.). Most weeks will feature some time in breakout rooms responding to prompts about the week's topics. After the first few weeks, students will lead discussion for 10-15 minutes on Thusdays about an article they will have chosen from Education Week, a weekly newsmagazine. |
