Prof. Alexander Kitroeff to Speak Friday, November 15
Details
Haverford's own Prof. Alexander Kitroeff will be speaking this Friday, November 15, in Stokes Hall.
Dr. Kitroeff will discuss his most recent publication, The Greeks and the Making of Modern Egypt.
His talk begins at 7:30 with a book signing and refreshments afterwards.
The Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia summarizes:
There are presently about 3,000 Greeks living in Egypt -- a pale reminder of a time in the 19th and 20th centuries when 100,000 Greeks lived and prospered in Cairo and Alexandria. At that time, the diverse Greek community played a prominent role in the country's banking, cotton, and commercial sectors. That all changed in the 1960s when Egypt's economy was nationalized. We learn this in the opening paragraphs of The Greeks and the Making of Modern Egypt, written by Modern European History scholar Alexander Kitroeff.
Please join us on Friday evening to learn about the rich history of the Greeks in Egypt in the modern era. This event is free and open to the public.
Sponsored by Haverford College Department of History and the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia. Refreshments will be served.
