Dr. Salvatore LaSpada '82 was appointed Chief Executive of the Institute for Philanthropy in London in March 2006; prior to that, he had worked for nine years at the Rockefeller Foundation in New York. Since his arrival in the U.K., he has gained broad public exposure in both the U.K. and international press.

He has brought to the Institute a donor education program, The Philanthropy Workshop, which he directed while at the Rockefeller Foundation and which helps wealthy donors to improve the effectiveness of their giving. He has also been a keynote speaker at conferences held by eminent private banks.

The Institute is committed not only to working with donors, but also to serving as a forum for new ideas in philanthropy. To that end, Dr. LaSpada has co-hosted or spoken at various events that discuss innovative models in this field. Within the last twelve months, philanthropy has emerged as an item of major interest in the news; accordingly, Dr. LaSpada has been interviewed by journalists from, among others, the Financial Times, CNN, CNBC and the Washington Post. In December, he also appeared on the BBC’s Hardtalk program to discuss current and future trends in this area. In these interviews, he has often cited the strong influence of Haverford’s Quaker values on his commitment to promoting philanthropy.
