Every student completes a thesis prior to graduation that contributes to their field of academia. The high-level research experience that students gain, in every department, prepares them for the next step in their academic life or career.

Nobel Prizes


George P. Smith ’63, one of three 2018 Nobel laureates in chemistry, is the fourth Haverford alum to win a Nobel Prize. A biology major while at Haverford, Smith credits his thesis advisor with introducing him to the field of molecular immunology that shaped his early career.

Support for entrepreneurship and innovation

The Whitehead Internship Program funds rising Haverford juniors and seniors in summer work related to entrepreneurship, small business, venture capital, or finance. The new Haverford Innovations Program (HIP) works to develop a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship on campus by providing mentoring and financial support for student startups.

Beyond the Bell

Former Whitehead interns and inaugural fellows of the HIP Summer Incubator, Rebecca Fisher ’18 and Joey Leroux ’18 founded their own business, Beyond the Bell Tours, which takes visitors on historical walking tours of Philadelphia that highlight the stories of traditionally underrepresented or marginalized communities to put the people back in “people’s history.”

    Yngvild Olsen ’91, a physician specializing in addiction medicine, has recently published a book meant to “clarify and demystify” the national health emergency.

    Stage actress Eve Passeltiner ’85 also has a busy career doing voice-over work and audiobook narration. “You get to be all of these people you might not get cast as in-person,” she says.

  • The English major is starting her career as a case intake analyst with the Philadelphia-based class action law firm Berger Montague.

  • The international studies major is interning at KiCK Global, a Barcelona-based marketing agency, prior to pursuing a similar position back in the U.S.

  • The psychology major and dance minor is splitting her time between her two respective passions at a Harvard Lab and a Cambridge ballet studio.

  • Political science major and Spanish minor Nico Kaplan ’19 is exploring the relationship between political and cultural projects by working with documentary distribution company Argot Pictures to reach Spanish-speaking audiences and organizations that stand committed to supporting immigrant communities in NYC.

  • Political science major and statistics, Chinese, and health studies minor Madeline Guth ’19 used her diverse set of tools to study the many ways that public policy can impact unintended pregnancy rates among low-income women.

  • The economics major and baseball player is preparing for a career in the front offices of the major leagues.

  • As a Haverford House Fellow, Gabe Halperin-Goldstein ’19 will spend next year working at the Center for Hunger-Free Communities, which advocates for policies that relieve food insecurity in Philadelphia.

  • The political science major was motivated to pursue a MENAR Fellowship teaching in Tunisia following a CPGC summer-internship abroad in Morocco.

  • The multi-talented physics major will be teaching and coaching while pursuing a graduate degree in education in the hopes of working with English language learners and immigrant students in America.

  • The Russian studies major will attend a university in Kazakhstan to hone her Russian proficiency for future government employment.
