The mission of the Haverford College Arboretum is to steward the College's historic tree collection while fostering a connection between our 216-acre campus and those who work, visit, study, and reside here. Maintaining the health, diversity, and history of the tree collection honors William Carvill's original 1834 landscape design, while our educational programming ensures continued engagement with this unique and treasured asset.

Squirrels are so common throughout our region that we often do not take a second glance if one passes us along our walks. If you have walked around Haverford’s Arboretum, chances are you have spotted one of these furry creatures while it was searching for acorns or scampering up a tree. Although we often do not give them much thought or appreciation, squirrels have fascinating lives and play important roles in our ecosystems. Today, I am going to take you through the life of a squirrel at Haverford—from a squirrel’s perspective—and offer you a glimpse into their world.

The daunting truths about climate change became more apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic than ever before. Simultaneously people all around the world developed a new appreciation for nature and our planet, creating the hope for consistent environmental advocacy in our post-pandemic future.
Now more than ever, it is important that we take advantage of all of nature’s healing effects on the mind and body. Not only does being outdoors encourage us to exercise more, but the simple act of being present in nature also has numerous psychological and physiological benefits.

The multi-year plan to preserve, revitalize, and renew Haverford's award-winning Arboretum is entering Phase III. Work will commence this summer and will continue through October 2020. Highlights of this new phase include continued progress toward a goal of planting of 1,000 new trees by 2027 as well as removal of trees in decline.
