Where They’re Headed: Meg Bowen ’23

The biology and music double major begins her post-grad career as a Medical Career Design Fellow in the orthopaedic department at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Meg Bowen ’23 is pursuing her interest in the medical field by working in CHOP’s orthopaedic department as an MCD fellow. “My position is essentially a combination of clinical research coordinating and scribing for a sports medicine surgeon and a spine surgeon,” she says.

Bowen developed an interest in research the summer after her sophomore year at Haverford when she worked in the Charkoudian lab conducting biochemistry research with her thesis advisor, Lou Charkoudian. “[Her] inquisitive and positive attitude made me feel encouraged that I could channel a similar mindset in whichever field I wanted, but particularly in the ever-changing world of research,” shared Bowen. “I learned about the joys of discovery and success in research, but also how to navigate major obstacles and setbacks. Those lessons have carried me far in all aspects of life.”

A course Bowen took at Haverford that stood out to her was “Molecular Neurobiology.” Despite finding the course challenging and having no previous neurobiology experience, she enjoyed the opportunity to discuss and debate current literature surrounding neurodegenerative diseases.

Another valuable resource was the Haverford alumni to whom she reached out for advice. Bowen, a student-athlete on the women’s soccer team says she “Zoomed many alums from my soccer team who are now in the medical field and asked them about their post-graduate experiences. I felt grateful that everyone was so enthusiastic and willing to share their words of wisdom with me.”

After her two years at CHOP, Bowen plans on attending medical school to become a physician. When asked about her fellow graduates, she expressed how proud she was to have graduated with such passionate peers and that she is excited to see all of the great things they accomplish in the future.

“Where They’re Headed” is a blog series chronicling the post-collegiate plans of recent Haverford graduates.
