Returning Students "To-Do" List
The following is your “to-do list” when you are getting ready for the possibility of returning:
Courses: If you hope to return in the next semester but are not ready to ask for permission to return by the time preregistration takes place, or if you have asked for that permission but have not gotten a decision (where needed) from the Dean of the College, please consult with your own Dean.
If your Dean suspects that you might be ready to return, you will be permitted to give them a list of courses (up to five credits) that you might want to take in the next semester, and they will ask the Registrar to place you in those of your preferred courses that have not met their maximum. This might help you have an academically smooth return to college. However, please note that we cannot guarantee that you will get into any specific course—we will do our best to accommodate on a case-by-case basis.
Housing: Much the same can be said of housing: if you hope to return in the next semester but are not ready to ask for permission to return by the time preregistration takes place, or if you have asked for permission but have not gotten a decision (where needed) from the Dean of the College, please consult with your Dean.
If your Dean suspects that you might be ready to return, they will ask the Housing Office to permit you to participate in room draw. If you miss room draw, then contact your Dean, and they will ask the Housing Office to work with you to find the most suitable placement—pending a final decision about your request for permission to return—from among the housing slots that remain unassigned.
If you wait too long, you must expect that you will be placed wherever there happens to be space, assuming that there still is any in the dorms. Again, waiting until only weeks before the semester greatly increases the likelihood that housing could be an impediment either to returning or returning on terms that approximate your preferences.
Financial Aid: Even if you are not sure whether you are going to return, or if it is the spring and you cannot or do not intend to return until the following January, you should complete your financial aid application for the next year. Doing so in the spring before you might return will help the Financial Aid Office to prepare a financial aid package for you. Having that information might be relevant to your decision to return, and it will leave you with one less thing to think about in the lead-up to your return.
If you then decide that you will not return that year, this will not affect your situation negatively in any way in the future. Once you have been given permission to return, please consult with the Financial Aid Office if you have any questions about your financial aid package, as the Dean’s Office is not in a position to advise you about such matters.
Email and Password: The passwords of students returning from College Leave will be reactivated after they are given permission by the Dean of the College to return. (Students on Dean’s Leave—with or without conditions—and Medical Leave retain access to email during their leaves, and this section does not therefore pertain to them.) However,
- if you have forgotten your password or have any other difficulty accessing password-protected online College resources after you are given permission to return from a College Leave, you can try resetting your password at accounts.haverford.edu;
- if you encounter any difficulty resetting your password or encounter any other difficulties accessing online resources, please contact the IITS Prodesk to ask for assistance;
- if IITS tells you that they are not aware that you have been given permission to return, please contact your Dean.
Meal Plan: To enroll in a meal plan, please consult the website of the Campus Dining Service.
Once you have been given permission to return to the College and resume your studies, the Dean’s Office will ask the Registrar’s Office to issue what is known as an “Incoming Notice,” which will go out to all relevant offices (including the Student Billing Office) so that they will know you are returning. It can take up to 3 business days (Monday through Friday) for this order to go out. Although we know you will be enthusiastic about returning, please wait therefore for a few days after getting permission to return before trying to tend to the matters on the checklist above.
