As assistant director of the OAR, my primary goal is to leverage the institutional credibility of this office to develop learning environments that are conducive to student learning. I believe students play a key role in that work, as do faculty and staff. Our students are brilliant, hardworking, and strategic but, admittedly, overwhelmed. Therefore, I often approach my work with the following questions: how can we empower students to maximize their effective use of all the tools available at college? What facts, concepts, skills, or procedures need to be made explicit and applied through guided, and faded, practice over time? What role can genuine community play in saving our students time?
In practice, this work could be embodied in multiple ways, such as, but not limited to: working weekly with you on the process of improving how you manage your time, or guiding you through a close reading of your syllabus to create a study plan for a course, discuss strategies to manage or better engage course readings, reflecting on a recent assignment or exam to develop strategies on how to improve, and providing space to reflect and stay accountable to goals you have set or long term projects you’re responsible for, such as your thesis. Most importantly, I'm interested in helping you recognize that you are the center of your academic success team at Haverford; the rest of your team is waiting to be chosen.
I have spent several years serving as a STEM Learning Specialist, tutor, and youth leader, but I'm here with all of you because of the people who treated me with kindness throughout my life. A number of my teachers, professors, staff mentors, and peers helped me discover the knowledge, resources, and opportunities I needed to develop my current skill set and support my learning and growth as a professional in Higher Education. I hope you are experiencing this same kindness here and that I get to show kindness to you as well.
Please feel free to schedule an appointment to meet here.
