Charlie Hale, a biology major at Haverford, is working with Firsthand, an educational initiative based at the University City Science Center. Firsthand coordinates and runs lab science programs for local middle and high school students from under-resourced schools. Lab projects emphasize a STEAM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) curriculum, seeking to get students excited about the natural sciences. As a program fellow, Charlie assists in the lab while also working on Firsthand’s outreach efforts. In addition to his work at Firsthand, Charlie hopes to strengthen ties between Haverford and environmental groups in Philadelphia. He intends to utilize some of these connections to help with curriculum development for Haverford’s Environmental Studies program, as well as for collaborative efforts with Ehaus, Haverford’s environmental co-op.
