Together with Humanities
About
Language study is a central pillar of the liberal arts: multilingual and multicultural perspectives are essential to the goal of holistic, global education. By integrating language(s) meaningfully across the curriculum, we allow students to access, engage with, and disseminate knowledge in transformative ways.
Through community-based learning, "Together with Humanities: Language, Community, and Power" brings students, faculty, staff, and community members together to engage more deeply with language(s), linguistics, and the intersection with power across disciplines—both within and outside of the traditional humanities.
"Together with Humanities" funds co-taught courses and course clusters that are designed and created in partnership with community organizations, providing new avenues to explore the humanities and justice-oriented pedagogy. Additionally, the grant supports a range of summer experiences and internships that grow out of these courses, allowing students to experience the power of a socially engaged humanities education in action.
"Together with Humanities" is funded by Mellon’s Humanities for All Times initiative, which supports the development of new humanities-based curricular and community projects at liberal arts colleges across the US. The program is supported by collaborations with existing centers and resources on campus, including Haverford College Libraries, the John B. Hurford ‘60 Center for the Arts and Humanities, and the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship.
