Leadership & Training
Anyone is welcome and encouraged to lead trips with HavOC. It's super easy and lots of fun! We offer training to those who want to build up there leadership skills and ability. If you're interested in leading a potential trip or just want to learn more, please fill out the form below. If you have any questions in the meantime, please don't hesitate to reach out to Max Schwartz at mdschwartz [at] haverford.edu.
Wilderness First Aid Training
For all of our overnight and rock climbing trips, we require leaders to become first aid certified.
If you are interested in leading an overnight HavOC trip this year, you must participate in the WFA course (or already be WFA certified). We are working on making HavOC safer for everyone, and this is one way that we can ensure our leaders are prepared for their trips. HavOC will pay for you to participate in the WFA, if you commit to leading at least one (preferably more!) trip in the two years that your WFA is valid (you can re-certify after 2 years by taking another WFA course if you want to keep your certification up to date).
Here's what NOLS has to say about the WFA course:
"This course is great for people of all experience levels, and is best suited for those who recreate outdoors where EMS response can be expected in a timely manner (fewer than eight hours). You'll learn the Patient Assessment System, how to provide effective first aid treatments for injuries and illnesses common in the outdoors, and how to make appropriate evacuation decisions."
Visit the NOLS website for more information.
Having WFA skills will allow you to be more confident when venturing into the backcountry, whether on your own, with a HavOC group, or with a few friends. Most courses cost $200-$300, so it's an amazing offer to get to take the course for free!
