The birth of a symbol, the plunder of a myth: A course on Teresa of Ávila, and her not-so-holy life and afterlife, taught by Professor Almudena Vidorreta in Spring 2020.
How has the most famous nun from the sixteenth century been imagined and depicted in literature and film? How did this exceptional woman become a feminist saint? This course focuses on the works of the Spanish mystic Teresa of Ávila as well as on the art and fiction drawn from her production since the Renaissance until The Simpsons and the Avengers today.
This course will be taught in Spanish with readings assigned in the original language; a fundamental part of the mandatory readings will be in English.
