The mission of the Ira De A. Reid House/Black Cultural Center is to uphold the legacy of Ira De A. Reid (i.e. the first tenured Black faculty) by ensuring that Haverford’s commitment to inclusion and diversity is maintained. The Ira De A. Reid House/Black Cultural Center will foster opportunities to encourage the social, academic, and cultural growth of the entire Haverford community by holding events that encourage dialogue among different groups of students/faculty on campus. We hope that the BCC will be the new hub for student life, a place where professors can hold classes, and a space for affinity groups/sports teams to hold meetings. Ultimately, the BCC is an environment full of black pride, appreciation for the black Diaspora, community involvement, collective consciousness, among other ideas that reflect Haverfordian values.
