The goal of AFFIRM is to create a safe, non-judgemental space for self-identified students of colour to discuss mental health/illness. People of color experience many forms of systemic violence and oppression, and this pervasive and long existing violence takes a toll on their mental health. Moreover, lots of students of color come from cultures where there is immense stigma surrounding mental illness, and there are institutional barriers to access the care they need and deserve. By sharing mental health related resources and personal experiences, we can hopefully establish a support network that they can reach out to when they need help. The space will definitely be shaped by the needs of students of color on campus.
