Haverford's Debate Team practices and teaches the skills of parliamentary-style debate, and then uses these skills at American Parliamentary Debate Association tournaments.
We choose our own topics and write our own cases, so our members bring in whatever issues they’re excited about - these vary enormously and touch on social movements, media and culture, technology, economic policy, international relations, and much more.
Our team fosters a passion for examining varied perspectives on an issue, and for developing the habits of thoughtful argumentation. It's a place for those who are passionate about debating, but also for those who want to be part of a welcoming and supportive group that enjoys exploring interesting topics outside of competition. We especially aim to empower the voices of those who may be underrepresented in the debating community.
We have members from both Haverford and Bryn Mawr, though our meetings are held at Haverford. Absolutely no debate experience is necessary to join: many of our members, including some of our leadership, started debating for the first time in college. Finally, it bears noting that our team is completely free to participate in; Haverford covers all costs to attend competitions.
