I was enrolled in Professor Paul Smith's West Meets East course, exploring the interaction between the United States and East Asia. The class was a research workshop designed to give us experience with primary materials such as diaries, letters, business correspondences, maps, and so on. Thus, I visited the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP) where I focused my research on all-male Chinese American communities. I encountered a fascinating document about the problem of unemployed, elderly, Chinese American [Men >> men]. They had planned to bring their families along with them but when the Cultural Revolution hit, they could not and were now alone, unemployed, and living on dwindling savings. The document was a letter from a leading Chinatown community leader addressed to the city council requesting funding to build a senior home.
