The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), a nonprofit medical research organization, is one of the largest sources of funding for medical research in the United States, and has both research and science education programs worldwide.

In the late 1980's, HHMI initiated a program of grant opportunities designed to improve the quality of science education, to encourage students to pursue careers in the sciences, and to improve access to science education for all students.   Haverford College is honored to have received a series of generous grants from HHMI, providing continuous support for undergraduate science programs since 1988.

HHMI support for interdisciplinary science has had a significant impact on education at Haverford, resulting in the establishment of an academic Concentration in Biochemistry and Biophysics, the hiring of new faculty members with expertise in the areas of biochemistry and biophysics, and the creation of faculty development courses which permit faculty members from all science departments to explore topics from a multidisciplinary perspective.
