Work Location: This position will be eligible for a hybrid work schedule, pursuant to the College’s Work Location Policy.
About the Position
The System Administrator position encompasses a wide variety of duties which include, but are not limited to, planning, implementation, documentation, maintenance, problem diagnosis, securing, and administrating of server technologies, with a specific focus on Linux operating systems and Web stack technologies. While the majority of this work occurs during normal business hours, this position is also on call for emergency support and may be scheduled to work outside of normal business hours on an as needed basis.
This position will also work alongside other members of the Infrastructure team to provide supplemental support for other technologies such as Haverford’s Windows, VMware, and Network infrastructure.
Primary Responsibilities
- Ensure the availability, security, scalability, and performance of Haverford College technology systems, with a specific focus on Linux servers and Web stack technologies, including PHP, Python, and MySQL
- Serve as primary administrator for systems running Linux operating systems
- Support applications that utilize Linux, including web servers and related technologies
- Ensure that updates, backups and disaster recovery efforts are completed, tested, and verified
- Manage and work on IT projects as either lead or individual contributor; effectively collaborate with peers, management, and end users
- Maintain detailed documentation of areas of responsibility
- Cross train and work closely with other members of the Infrastructure team
- Other duties as assigned
Line of Report: The System Administrator reports to Director of Infrastructure Services. No direct reports, may supervise student workers as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Proficiency with Linux operating systems
Professional Competencies
- General knowledge in Windows, VMWare, and Networking best practices
- Strong communication skills with the ability to create positive interactions with end users
- Ability to identify areas for change that will improve service levels, strengthen security, and reduce risk
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field with 3+ years of experience or 5+ years of equivalent work experience
- Prior experience with Web stack technologies, including PHP, Python, and MySQL or similar technologies
- Prior experience with VMWare, Windows, and networking technologies desired
- Cloud platform experience a plus
