About the Position
The Science Center Buildings and Laboratory Safety Coordinator supports the science laboratories and programs (associated with both teaching and research) within the Marian E. Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Center (KINSC) by coordinating buildings-related needs and laboratory safety-related procedures, including supporting the proper handling of hazardous materials. The Coordinator collaborates with the Scientific Materials Coordinator on the purchasing, recording, delivery, management, and disposal of scientific materials. The person in this role will also lead safety inspections, and collaborate with academic programs and research laboratories to manage space and safety issues, and chemical inventory management.
Primary Responsibilities
Laboratory Safety and Hazardous Materials Management (approximately 60%):
- Work in close coordination with the Campus Safety Coordinator in areas of KINSC laboratory safety, compliance, and management of hazardous materials and waste
- Coordinate and support safety training for faculty, staff, and students in KINSC-based programs, in collaboration with Department/Program Chairs
- Work with Campus Safety Coordinator to lead and execute KINSC-based lab inspections and compliance reporting activities
- Coordinate the hazardous chemical and biological waste programs (and disposal of waste as needed), in collaboration with the Campus Safety Officer, including picking up and restocking full sharps boxes and waste containers
- Coordinate with the Science Materials Coordinator to collaboratively maintain the online chemical inventory, including delivering incoming chemicals to appropriate labs or storage rooms, scanning out the barcodes from empty chemicals, and disposing of chemical containers. Maintain Safety Data Sheet (SDS) files for hazardous materials
- Participate in College committees related to safety, such as the Institutional Biosafety Committee, the Laboratory Safety Committee, and the OSHA/Labor and Industry Workplace Safety Committee, and work across constituencies as required by those activities
- Receive and manage gas and cryogen tanks and coordinate ordering of gasses with the Scientific Materials Coordinator, including moving and placing gas tanks for psychology/neuroscience programs and managing regulators
- Monitor equipment safety issues and advocate for program and institutional improvements through coordination with instrument and lab specialists, Department/Program Chairs, and Lab Safety Committee
- Interact directly with the chairs of relevant KINSC-based departments and programs (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Astronomy, Psychology, Neuroscience, and other relevant programs) and Fine Arts on an as needed basis with respect to chemicals/labs, in collaboration with Campus Safety Coordinator
KINSC Buildings Coordination (approximately 40%):
- Serve as the KINSC Liaison with Facilities Management for building and infrastructure issues, and work proactively with Facilities to maintain and update necessary infrastructure for safe and effective science laboratory operations, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and electronic services
- Coordinates with department and program scientific support staff (instrument specialists, laboratory technicians etc), and Academic Department/Program Chairs in facilities management of and general oversight of building infrastructure across KINSC buildings
- Act as a point person in discussions of general issues that concern KINSC buildings maintenance or remodeling issues and report any that arise to Haverford’s facilities management department
- Keep track of the progress of repair work
General:
- Work with the KINSC Director, and KINSC-wide staff to investigate and coordinate inter-departmental improvements to the KINSC physical facility in support of KINSC programmatic and College mission-related goals
- Work closely with the Scientific Materials Coordinator and as part of the KINSC scientific support staff team, including both KINSC wide and departmental/program-based support staff (e.g., Biology and Chemistry Instrument Specialists, the Research Machinist, the Autoclave and Media Technician, the Linux Support Specialist, the Psychology Research Manager, and the Animal Technician in the vivarium and fish facilities)
- Supervise student workers involved in inventory-related and other safety or related program support activities
Line of Report: The Science Center Buildings and Laboratory Safety Coordinator reports to the Director of the Koshland Integrated Science Center and interacts directly with the chairs of relevant KINSC-based departments and programs (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Physics & Astronomy, Psychology, Neuroscience, and other relevant science programs), and the College Wide Laboratory Safety Committee, serving on that committee.
The Science Center Buildings and Laboratory Safety Coordinator also works very closely with the Scientific Materials Coordinator and as part of the KINSC support team, including both KINSC wide and departmental/program based support staff (e.g. at present this includes the Biology and Chemistry Instrument Specialists, the Research Machinist, the Autoclave and Media Technician, the Linux Computing Support Specialist, the Psychology Research Manager and the Strawbridge Observatory Manager/Physics Laboratory Support).

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- Training and experience in chemical and biological safety and hazardous materials management

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in the chemical or biological sciences
- Master’s degree or PhD in the sciences
- Experience with chemical inventory management
- Experience with management of scientific supplies and equipment
- Experience with safety management and regulatory requirements associated with chemicals and hazardous materials
- Experience with building and facilities management
