Haverford College invites applications to our available full-time, exempt, benefit-eligible Associate Director or Director of Pre-Professional Advising.
This position will: provide advising and application support to students and alumni for pre-professional advising for health and law schools; advise students and alumni interested in medical, public health, other health care professions, and law careers; develop related programming, resources, services, and collaborative initiatives; and, contribute to the overall CCPA team.
Essential Functions & Primary Responsibilities:
Provide advising and support to applicants for medical and health-related schools (i.e. MD, DO, MPH, PT, Nursing, and related health programs), law school, and business school programs. Provide advice about the exploration process and gaining experience for health and law careers.
Provide Medical and Health Professions School advising and support for students and alumni, including but not limited to:
- Advise current students and alumni interested in medicine and other health-related professions. Develop relationships with students to help them see the different paths alumni can take to prepare for the health profession and/or professional /graduate schools.
- Hold informational meetings for current students at all stages of their undergraduate careers regarding medical school selection criteria, MCAT tests, and application to health professions schools.
- Provide support (advising, programs, initiatives) for first years and sophomores to help decide if medical school is a path they are interested in pursuing. Work proactively and collaboratively with underrepresented groups.
- Provide info and advice about gaining relevant experience while an undergraduate student and about options for seniors taking a year or two before applying to school.
- Coordinate the writing of letters of recommendation/evaluation in collaboration with a faculty committee and oversee the online letters of recommendation platform, ensuring that these letters are sent to health professions schools in a timely manner. Engage a contract writer to assist in writing the Committee Letters.
- Provide ~40 candidates with feedback on essays, choice of schools, timing of application and taking of MCAT, and interviewing skills.
- Organize the faculty Pre-Health Committee, hold two+ meetings per semester, and keep them apprised of changes in requirements, acceptance rates.
- Develop relationships with admissions officers from health professions graduate schools and with other pre-medical advisors and stay informed on up-to-date information on health professions program admissions requirements by attending professional meetings, reading websites and list-serves, and talking with or visiting health professions schools.
- Develop relationships and close connections with faculty and related student groups. Educate student leaders and faculty advisors on pre-health academic requirements. Work collaboratively and closely with related student groups, such as the Pre Health Society.
- Plan informational programming for current students featuring Haverford alumni, admissions officers from professional schools, and practitioners in health professions, as well as a session during new student orientation.
- Manage a physician mock medical school interview program.
- Manage several early assurance medical school admissions programs.
- Collaborate on joint programs with Bryn Mawr College and Swarthmore College, and meet with their pre-health advisors each semester.
- Update and enhance the pre-health website and the Health Professions Advising Handbook.
- Research and potentially launch the development of a Pre-Professional Advising mentorship.
- Be an active member of NECOME Undergrad Advisor's group.
Provide Law School Advising and support for students and alumni, including but not limited to:
- Provide advising to students and alumni interested in applying to law school, with close attention to 35-40 applicants each year.
- Advise on law school selection based on statistics and experience.
- Critique essays and resumes specifically for law school.
- Keep records of pre-law applicants.
- Plan and present pre-law orientations and other related programs, and a session during new student orientation. Organize and participate in law school admission and career panels.
- Build and maintain relationships with law school admissions staff.
- Work with Pre-Law Advisor at Bryn Mawr to develop Bi-Co law school programs.
- Collect, analyze and summarize annual law school admission data provided by the Law School Admissions Council.
- Create an annual report on applicants and admission results for CCPA, Admissions, Dean’s Office and other college offices.
- Update and enhance handouts and website information about general pre-law information.
- Serve as advisor/liaison to the Pre Law Society, Mock Trial Team, and other related student groups, and the office liaison to the Haverford College Lawyers Network.
- Participate in Northeast Pre Law Advisors Association programs.
General support
- As part of the Center for Career and Professional team, work on the strategic initiatives for the office and provide support on programming.
- Assist with other services and programs of the Center for Career and Professional Advising as needed (resume, cover letter and grad school essay reviews).
- Potential of providing Business School Advising for alumni in the application process.
Line of Report: This position reports to the Dean of Career and Professional Advising and has no direct reports.
Essential or Non-essential Employee:
This status determines for the identification, treatment of time, and use of “Essential Personnel” during campus emergencies, including those that dictate suspension of services and/or closure of operations, i.e. inclement weather. During an emergency, Essential Personnel are required to be on campus in order to provide services that relate directly to the health, safety, and welfare of the College, ensure continuity of key operations, and maintain and protect College’s properties.

Education, Training, & Experience:
- Required: Master’s Degree required. Graduate work in counseling, student affairs, higher education, and/or related fields is highly desirable.
- 3-5 years of experience as Associate Director and 5+ years of experience as Director of career counseling or academic advising in a higher education setting with a familiarity with professional/graduate school application and admissions requirements.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, collaboration, organizational and planning skills, and ability to work on teams.
- The ability to work effectively and build strong relationships with different constituencies: students, alumni, faculty, medical schools, law schools, prospective students, staff, and colleagues,
- Must have strong basic computing skills and knowledge of social media. Familiarity with administrative oversight of online platforms (i.e. processing of letters of recommendations
- Counseling/advising skills
- Interest and knowledge of medical, public health, and law fields
