The senior thesis represents the culmination of a Haverford student’s academic experience, and is one of the most important and rewarding ways that Haverford realizes its educational mission. It is an opportunity to do original research at levels usually reserved for graduate students, in partnership with faculty mentors. Haverford College is one of a very few institutions in the country that includes a senior thesis project as part of every student’s academic program.

“Linguistic Diversity, Threats to Diversity, and Resistance”

Taught by assistant professor of linguistics Brook Lillehaugen, this course addresses issues of linguistic diversity, experiences of difference, and power structures as they relate to the perception and use of language, and struggles for justice in linguistic context.

Taught by Rebecca Compton, this psychology class focuses on the intersection between neuroscience—research about the brain—and aspects of society such as education, politics, law, and the military.

All physics and astronomy majors have the opportunity to perform meaningful and potentially publishable research, working closely with our faculty in fields such as quantum computing, observational cosmology, nonlinear physics and fluid dynamics, extragalactic astronomy, biophysics, and nanoscience.

“Education Reform in America: Politics and Policy”

Taught by Zachary Oberfield, this political science course is designed to help students gain a deeper understanding of the politics of school choice and the efficacy of recent American education reforms, like charter schools and school vouchers.

Building on years of student interest stoked by a decade of classes in the discipline and the introduction of a  Tri-Co minor in 2011, an innovative new Bi-Co environmental studies major launched this year, combining insights from biology, anthropology, literature, and more.

Through the Tri-College Consortium, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Swarthmore students take classes at all three schools and frequently collaborate on extracurricular activities.

The new Tri-Co Philly Program is a semester-long, non-residential program that provides students both curricular and co-curricular activities in nearby Philadelphia.

“Introduction to Latin Literature: Friends and Enemies of Rome”

Taught by Associate Professor of Classics Bret Mulligan, this classics course investigates who the Romans were by studying how they described friendship and their friends, and those enemies who resisted, betrayed, and bedeviled them.
