Friend in Residence

This homepage ran on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. Content and links may have changed.

The Friend in Residence program brings gifted and experienced Quakers to campus for extended interactions with students, staff, faculty, and the community to stimulate reflection on the connections between academic pursuits and “letting one’s life speak.”

Friend in Residence Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge, a Quaker South African politician and activist and acolyte of Steve Biko, will give public talks as part of her residency and is also co-teaching a class, “After the Sunset: Lessons in Transitions to Peace, the South African Example,” with Associate Professor Zolani Ngwane this semester. COOL CLASSES: "Anthropology of Human Rights: Engaged Ethnography and Anthropologist as Witness"

COOL CLASSES: “Anthropology of Human Rights: Engaged Ethnography and Anthropologist as Witness”

Taught by Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology Brie Gettleson, this course examines how anthropologists contribute to human rights in law and grassroots movements. Through partnerships with the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship and Philadelphia Area Creative Collaboratives, students have access to experts and activists on Native issues and storytelling, crafting expert testimony for asylum hearings, human rights archival partnerships, and prison abolition.

Our Cool Classes blog series highlights interesting, unusual, and unique courses that enrich the Haverford College experience. See what other courses the Department of Anthropology is offering.

Coaching a Championship Team

Head coach Bruce Berque ’88 led the University of Texas men’s tennis team to the program’s first national championship.

Read "Coaching a Championship Team" from the Fall 2019 issue of Haverford Magazine.

“Teams with best cultures have been player-driven," said Berque. "That was my goal and it worked out.”
