Details
Joanna Birkner BMC '16 will be traveling to Turkey to teach English.
Birker is a Bryn Mawr College graduate who majored in History at Haverford. The history faculty is exceedingly proud of Ms. Birkner, and wish her the very best in Turkey.
"When I was sixteen and applying to be an exchange student, I could have never known how much one year abroad would change my life path. Six years later, I realize that there has never been a more crucial time to have a good understanding of Turkish history and politics. I have devoted much of my collegiate studies to expanding my knowledge of Turkish. As a history major, Turkey’s past fascinates me. For my senior academic year, I wrote my history thesis on the feminism that emerged during the period of transition from Ottoman Empire to Turkish Republic. I am delighted to return to Turkey this September as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant. Becoming a Fulbright ETA in Turkey seems to be the natural next step in my life trajectory. The Fulbright experience offers a means to deepen to my connection to a country I already love and know well. Having been a student in Turkey, I can think of nothing more rewarding than reversing this role and serving as a teacher and mentor to others. I am grateful for the support that I have received at Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and UPenn in following my passions and I cherish the friendships and skills that living in Turkey has presented me."
