  • Nathan Shelton '11 spent the summer in Gran Chaco, Paraguay, studying indigenous language revival efforts with National Geographic's Enduring Voices Project.
  • A CBS News moneywatch.com column notes that of the top 50 schools that produced the most engineering and science PhDs from 1997 through 2006, 28 are liberal arts colleges. Haverford ranked number 13 on the overall list, which was compiled by the National Science Foundation.

  • Through a collaborative grant from the National Science Foundation, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Helen White will join a team of scientists examining the effects of the BP oil spill on the deep water ecology of the Gulf of Mexico.
  • For its 10th-anniversary issue, <em>The Chronicle Review</em> asked scholars and illustrators to answer this question: What will be the defining idea of the coming decade, and why? Among the invited writers contributing to the debate was Haverford College Associate Professor of Physics Stephon Alexander.

  • Assistant Professor of Physics Peter Love has received the National Science Foundation CAREER award, which honors outstanding young college faculty members. The grant, which gives Love $500,000 over five years, will support his attempts to create efficient simulations of quantum computer systems, which may someday result in the development of a quantum computer.
  • Jamal Elliott '96 and Kristi Littell '94 are co-CEOs of Philadelphia's Wissahickon Charter School where Haverford's tradition of consensus and community informs their collaborative leadership style.
  • Elisa Asensio, 101, who taught Spanish at Haverford and Swarthmore, died August 23 at the Quadrangle. Burial is scheduled for Friday, August 27th, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter and Saint Paul Cemetery, 1600 Sproul Road, Springfield, Pa.
  • Benjamin R. Collins Professor of Social Science and Associate Professor of Political Science Anita Isaacs travels to Guatemala with student research assistants Juliana Morgan-Trostle '12, Alejandro Rettig y Martinez '12, and Rachel Schwartz '11 to study the country's struggle for justice and reparations in the wake of its 36-year civil war.
  • In her blog Pan & Ink, Lis Fogt '96 reviews food-related books, muses on baking and the experience of "flow," and shares recipes for chocolate chip cookies, empanadas, and quinoa salad. She talks to Kayla Hoskinson '11 about food and life.
  • Haverford achieved its Annual Fund goal for the 2009-2010 fiscal year thanks to alumni, parents and friends. Three classes are honored for their high levels of participation.
  • Rose Howse '11 is spending the summer teaching English to underprivileged children in Colima, Mexico.
  • The founder of the food blog A Kitchen in Brooklyn talks to Kayla Hoskinson '11 about her signature dishes, her favorite New York City restaurants and her least favorite food.
  • Shibulal is pictured in Caperberry, her Bangalore restaurant, holding the award which she received in February 2010 at the Global Youth Marketing Forum.
  • Zoe Becker '12 is spending the summer investigating ideas that can help practitioners at the Jorge Prieto Family Health Center better serve their patients.
  • Emily Bock '11, Jennifer Rodriguez '10, and Emily Shaw '10 were presenters on a panel called "Cripping Sex and Gender" at the recent Society for Disability Studies Annual Meeting. The students' work explored connections among disability, sex and gender.
