Haverford Headlines


  • Look for Haverford College in the closing credits of the new Jane Campion film <em>Bright Star</em>, about poet John Keats' secret love affair with Fanny Brawne. Haverford gets a special thank you for providing access to an 1819 love letter written by Keats that is part of Special Collections at Magill Library.

  • Frederic MacDonald-Dennis, a former Director of LGBT Affairs at the University of Michigan, will work with the Haverford community over the coming year to restructure the role of the OMA.
  • An op-ed piece called Kleiman's argument about changing the U.S. approach to crime fighting, outlined in his book <em>When Brute Force Fails: How to Have Less Crime and Less Punishment,</em> "a revolutionary idea."

  • Assistant professor of astronomy and physics Beth Willman received $422,000 in NSF grants to support her path-breaking work on ultra-faint galaxies. Six Haverford students are working with Willman on her research.
  • The Jaharis Family Foundation pledges support for a new dormitory, tentatively sited on Orchard Lot, which will be a cornerstone of Haverford's upcoming comprehensive fundraising campaign.
  • Assistant Professors of political science Craig Borowiak and Barak Mendelsohn conducted the first in a series of public discussions, sponsored by the CPGC, dubbed "The Borowiak-Mendelsohn Debates."
  • Friedman, a former journalist, focuses his research on U.S. built environments and how they have reflected international power relationships throughout the 20th century.
  • The high-tech camera, along with reduced foliage and brighter lights, is meant to increase safety along the trail leading to the Haverford College Apartments.
  • The longtime activist and current president of American Jewish World Service will visit Haverford October 6-9 as part of the President's Social Justice Speaker Series. Her visit is co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship.
  • White's position is the first to be funded in part by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support environmental studies at Haverford. She'll also help to develop an environmental studies curriculum.
  • John Spielman's life, career, and service to the College will be honored at a memorial service on Saturday, September 26, at the Haverford Friends Meeting House. Among those from the Haverford community eulogizing Spielman at the event will be Roger Lane, who, in the following "Memorial Minute," celebrates his former history department colleague as a "son of the west" and man of "timeless" virtues.

  • The student who was injured in a fall during a dance in Founders Great Hall earlier this month has resumed classes. (September 17, 2009)

  • The Delaware County Medical Examiner is awaiting crime lab reports before issuing a ‘final determination' in the case of a fatality arising from a car fire in the South Lot earlier this month. Read more>(September 17, 2009)
  • From the agora to the acropolis, students in a class co-taught by classics professors Robert Germany and Bret Mulligan are getting a sense of the physical layout of fifth-century Athens with the help of a series of signposts that show the equivalent locations on campus of important Athenian landmarks.
