Public Engagement: Athletics Team Involvement

Most of the athletic department's community service efforts are organized by the Haverford College Athletic Association (HCAA), which is the college's student-athlete advisory committee.

Some projects that the athletic department has completed recently or traditionally:

  • Special Olympics at Villanova University - about 200 student-athletes have volunteered to help at the Special Olympics for each of the past three or four years. Learn more >
  • Thanksgiving Food Drive - every coach and and every student-athlete donates food and money to a food drive that has benefited ElderNet (in past years) and the Community Action Agency of Delaware County (the last two years)
  • Joe Schwartz ALS 3K Run/Walk - Cory Walts, the college's fitness center director, has organized a charity race on campus for the past three years that benefits ALS research. Learn more >
  • After-School Mentoring Program - although we're still in the process of getting this project up and running this year, the HCAA has organized volunteers to participate in an after-school mentoring program at Belmont Charter School for the past six or seven years; on average, we probably have 15-20 student-athletes participating in this effort each semester; this project won a Jostens NCAA D-III Community Service Award a few years ago
  • Haverford for Haiti - on one Saturday last spring, all spring varsity teams participated in a pledge drive that benefited Doctors Without Borders in their earthquake relief efforts

Some projects that individual teams have completed recently or traditionally:

  • Holiday Toy Drive - the baseball team organizes a holiday toy drive each year that benefits "Operation Santa Claus" through the Archdiocese of Philadelphia
  • "Home Runs for Haiti" - the baseball team, led by Jake Chaplin '12, organized a pledge drive that raised money for Doctors Without Borders for earthquake relief efforts; this project raised more than $11,000 last spring. Learn more >
  • "Dig 4 a Cure" - the volleyball team participates in a pledge drive each year that benefits cancer research efforts. Learn more >
  • "Hoops From the Heart" - the men's and women's basketball teams organize a basketball clinic each year for local youths that benefits the Community Action Agency of Delaware County. Learn more >
  • Philabundance - the softball team volunteered at a Philabundance food distribution center
  • LEAPS - the men's lacrosse team has participated in a program that uses lacrosse to help mentor inner-city youths
  • Shoe Collection - the men's and women's track teams collect old shoes from the campus community each year and donate them to the Afya Foundation
  • Homeless Shelter - the women's soccer team volunteers to cook and serve meals at a homeless shelter run by Terry Newirth
  • "Relay for Life" - a few different teams, including men's soccer, women's lacrosse, women's tennis, and field hockey, are planning to participate in "Relay for Life" this spring. Learn more >

These are just some of the community service efforts undertaken by our athletic department each year. On top of the department-wide and team-wide community service projects, countless student-athletes participate in their own, individual volunteer efforts through Eighth Dimension or other avenues each year.
