For Incoming Students
The Chesick Scholars Program provides a welcoming community and a suite of workshops, seminars and experiences that have been especially designed for first-generation college students and/or students who come from low-income (FLI) backgrounds.
The following opportunities are offered during the summer before you begin your first year at Haverford:
These virtual sessions during the month of July are designed to provide practical guidance to students who are new to the social and academic culture of Haverford, and to introduce the College’s ample resources.
These small group meetings (no more than 12 students) meet 3 times in July with a faculty member to discuss common readings or topics.
Horizons provides you the opportunity to gain a head start on your transition to college life, and connect with FLI classmates and FLI Student Leaders on campus during the 5 days before other students move in for Customs.
The following opportunities are offered to you during your first year at Haverford:
College 101 is a full semester course offered exclusively to first year Chesick Scholars. The focus of the course is to introduce you to the resources and opportunities for connection and success at Haverford. Topics will include time-management, study skills, and how to get involved on campus. The class will meet once per week for 1.5 hours and will require you to do another on-campus activity of your choice once a week (attend a visiting lecture, dance performance, or music recital; go to a professor’s office hours; attend a club meeting; etc.). There will be no homework or grades. This attendance based course will earn you 2 of your required 6 PE credits. Sign up in Bionic when you register for the rest of your classes!
The Chesick Faculty Mentoring Program is your opportunity to be matched with a Haverford faculty member who will meet with you every two weeks to be a supportive ear and helpful resource as you adjust to college life. Your faculty mentor will be your go-to person for questions about academic life on campus and will serve as a cheerleader throughout your Haverford journey. Sign up to be matched with a mentor by July 18. You will receive a form via email.
