Horizons Leadership Institute
The Haverford Horizons Leadership Institute, or Horizons, is a leadership development program for students who have demonstrated leadership potential in high school. This invitation-only opportunity is designed for students who are first-generation to college, low income, or from backgrounds under-represented in higher education. Students are asked to respond to invitations to attend by June 15, 2020.
Horizons provides you the opportunity to gain a head start on your transition to college life, and connect with classmates and student leaders before Customs begins. The program focuses on developing your strengths as a leader, addresses concerns common among first-generation college students, introduces you to Haverford resources and opportunities, and helps you to build relationships with faculty and staff. Through workshops, activities, and one-on-one advising, you will learn more about how to pursue and enhance your academic, leadership, and professional interests at Haverford. Horizons participants have gone on to serve as Honor Council co-chair, Student Council co-chair, and in other leadership positions at Haverford. Even after the program ends, the experience and friends gained during Horizons will stay with you through your college journey.
There is no cost to participate in Horizons. If you have already made travel arrangements, we may be able to provide financial assistance toward any costs associated with changing your plans so you can participate. Please note: Depending on the COVID-19 pandemic, Horizons may be held remotely in fall 2020. This decision will be made by August 1st. We encourage students to opt for flexible tickets when purchasing travel on airlines, trains, or buses so that you may make changes to the date and time of your trip before departure with no additional fees.
Program Dates: August 25, 2020 - September 2, 2020
Move-In: Tuesday, August 25, 2020
Horizons will be delivered virtually this year in order to accommodate students who are learning remotely and/or are unable to be on campus by August 25, 2020.
Welcome Horizons Leadership Institute 2020
Student Resource People (SRP)
Horizons SRPs work with faculty and staff to design Horizons and support students in their first year transition.

Hi, I'm Tazkia (she/her), I was born and raised in Bangladesh, spent most of my teen years living in NYC and have recently moved to Pittsburgh! I am a sophomore and majoring in Computer Science. I am a publicity coordinator for the Pan-Asian Resource Center (PARC) and a Questbridge scholar. I also work at the Admissions Office as an Access and Diversity Initiative Programmatic Intern (ADI). I had an amazing time attending Horizons my freshman year and I cannot wait to see what this program holds for the Class of 2024!

My name is Saint (he/his), a rising sophomore from Philadelphia, PA, but I’m originally from RDC. Although on the Pre-Med track, I’m actually interested in mathematics and I’m looking to pursue a mathematics major and biochemistry concentration. On campus, I am a member of the Men’s Soccer Club. Outside of school, I enjoy playing soccer and going on long bike rides. You will mostly find me on Lancaster Ave on Friday afternoons, biking to UPenn to play pickup soccer. As a past horizonee, I am so excited to be a part of the program again (as a SRP this time).
Hasibe Caballero Gomez '21
I'm Hasibe (she/her), a rising senior from the beautiful Los Angeles, California but I'm originally from San Pedro Sula, Honduras. So proud catracha, willing to hit any Central American spots in Philly with you. I'm a Chemistry Major with an Environmental Science Minor, but outside of that I'm really interested in Latin American history and politics. I'd say I'd spend most of my time at the Coop since I work there, but you can also find me in a lab, the new food pantry (come through!! we have snacks!) or at any ALAS events. If the weather is nice then I'll definitely be outside. Lastly, I'm willing to talk about anything, so don't be afraid to come up and talk to me.

Congratulations and welcome to Haverford! I am Berlensie (she/her), a sophomore and a prospective Chemistry major on the premed track. I hold one of the student supervisor positions at the DC and I think the T.V. show Friends is better than The Office. I will support my opinion any day. In case you need some more conversation starters here are a few: Grey's Anatomy, procrastination, coffee, piano/guitar, and Criminal Minds.

I've taken different classes about social movements, filmmaking, and media and even tried skateboarding, step, and volleyball. I would love to talk about how to explore new interests and have fun both in and out of class. You can also find me at the Womxn of Color House with a bunch of other cool folks, where you're always welcome to come practice self-care with some face masks, join a dance party, or binge a TV show.
