A screening of the rarely seen Yiddish film Mothers of Today (1939), which has been restored by the National Center for Jewish Film at Brandeis.
Made in the USA and directed by Harry Lynn. This soapy, over-the-top drama about assimilation has it all: cantors and gangsters, Yiddish songs, liturgical singing and comedy interludes. Discussion to follow the film. In Yiddish, with English subtitles (85 minutes). For more information about this film, see www.haverford.edu/ycf and a review in the Forward here.
