CLUB LIFE: A New Football Team At Haverford?

Though the College hasn’t fielded a varsity team since 1972, a new club began biweekly flag football games this past fall.

The Flag Football club was founded this past fall out of a love for American football and a desire to make the sport more accessible to the Haverford community. The club is non-discriminatory and welcomes people of all genders and athletic backgrounds. Interested students can register for the club on Bionic for PE credit.

What: Flag football is a medium- to high-intensity sport that replaces heavy tackling with stealing flags from opposing players. The sport is, thus, a safer version of American football, and attracts both amateurs and professionals alike. Every year various associations sponsor national and international competitions. The number of players can be flexible, and the club is able to accommodate games with anywhere from four to nine players on each team.

Who: Jimmy Wu and Nic Marcotrigiano (both Class of 2018) are the current captains of the club.

When: The club was founded in Fall 2015. Games are held twice a week: Wednesdays at 4:15 p.m. on HCA Green, and Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. on Featherbed Field. Teams are formed on arrival, and the field is set up for a full game, which typically ends when a team first scores 11 points.

Did you know: The club is currently the only flag football team in the entire Tri-Co, consisting of 30 members and 10 to 16 regular participants. It is also proud to be the only Haverford football club to brave extreme weather conditions, having played games in hail and thunder.
