Club Life: FUCS Brings the Music to You

The Federation United Concert Series is a group committed to bringing an eclectic range of musical acts right to your doorstep.

WHAT: The Federation United Concert Series (FUCS) is much more than a coarse acronym. For anyone interested in contemporary music scenes, live performances, and a good time, FUCS is the place to be. “We are a group of six to ten music lovers dedicated to delivering today’s most relevant artists to Haverford’s stages,” says Henry Nye ‘20, one of this year’s co-heads. “We typically book three to eight shows per semester, featuring musical artists of varying styles including indie rock, rap, electronic, and more.”

WHO: Concerts held by FUCS are open to all members of the Bi-Co. Individuals seeking to be a part of the concert-booking process are encouraged to apply during the Fall Semester of each academic year. “We look primarily for [first-years] and sophomores who have a passion for attending concerts and finding new niche music,” says Nye. “We often look for people with some familiarity with music scenes in New York or Philadelphia, since those artists are typically the most accessible.”

WHEN: FUCS meets once every two weeks to organize concert lineups and teach the process of booking bands to its new members. “Often finding artists to perform is easier than you think,” says Nye. “All it takes is locating their management email, reaching out, and then working with [Director of Student Engagement and Leadership] Michelle Leao to get together a proposal.” Community members interested in attending concerts should keep an eye out for the group’s posters, which can colorfully inform them of the time and place (the usual haunts are Lunt Basement and James House) of upcoming events. FUCS began the spring semester with a show by Sargasso and Think Machine in James House. Upcoming shows include Kississippi and Alicia (2/28), Yumi Zouma (3/15), Garth (4/4), Parlour Noir (4/17), and Suzi Analouge and Lorde Fred33 (4/24).

DID YOU KNOW: During its almost 20-year tenure, FUCS has hosted numerous artists who have gone on to achieve varying degrees of fame and success, including, among many others, Vampire Weekend, Animal Collective, Major Lazer, and Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings.
